STUDY GUIDE -- FINAL EXAM

New material is from Chapters 9, 10, 12, 13, &15.. In addition, we covered global warming, some of which is in the last part of Chapter 9. We also discussed some issues related to the importance of wildlife and wildlife conservation.

We saw the video on conservation and read "Once There Was A River". Be sure to understand the material in the last two sections of the course web site.

For the comprehensive portion, give particular attention to the old exams.

Some general idea you should be able to discuss.

1. What would be the effect on such things as energy consumption and development of alternative forms of energy if we were to maintain artificially low prices for fossil fuels (e.g., subsidize oil and coal production and not support clean air legislation).

2. A few politicians and fewer scientists has suggested that environmentalists are extremists and there is little basis for worrying about such things as global warming, tropical deforestation, oil exploration in ecologically sensitive areas, and species loss. How would you respond to them.

3. What are some of the principal problems we face in having a sustainable society and how might we face them. Consider in particular such issues as population growth, food production, loss of biodiversity, and energy utilization.

4. The current energy bill in congress greater development of domestic resources, including coal, and little for conservation or alternative energy sources. How successful is this likely to be.
